Lift testing

Job-related lift assessments based on the employer’s requirements. Confirm the protocol and clinic availability before your visit.

An assessment matched to the job

A lift test may be requested as part of a job-related exam. The employer’s instructions define the tasks, loads, and documentation being requested; there is no single standard test that applies to every job.

Contact the clinic before attending so staff can confirm whether the requested assessment can be performed. A lift test does not automatically include a full functional-capacity evaluation or specialist rehabilitation assessment.

What to discuss before testing

Explain why the test is needed and provide the written job requirements. Tell the provider about current pain, recent injuries or surgery, and any existing work restrictions so the planned assessment can be reviewed.

  • Confirm the required lifting task and employer-provided protocol.
  • Ask whether an employer authorization or additional physical exam is required.
  • Confirm preparation, clothing or footwear requirements, and how results are provided.
  • Discuss any limitation that could affect safe participation before beginning.

Bring complete instructions

Bring your employer’s forms, job description, authorization, and any relevant restriction or treatment records. If the instructions are incomplete, additional information may be needed before the visit can proceed.

Ask your clinic about age or exam eligibility requirements and fees. Completion of an assessment does not guarantee a hiring decision or clearance for every task.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk in for any lift test?

Call first with the employer’s protocol. The required task and equipment must match what your clinic can provide.

How much weight will I lift?

That depends on the requested protocol. Confirm the requirements with your employer and the clinic; no fixed weight applies to every assessment.

Is a lift test the same as a functional-capacity evaluation?

They are not interchangeable. If your employer requests a functional-capacity evaluation or a specialist assessment, confirm that exact requirement before arranging care.

What if I have an injury or work restriction?

Tell the provider and bring the relevant records. The requested assessment may need to be deferred or addressed through a different evaluation.
