Check the cause of a blocked ear

Ear wax normally protects the ear canal, but a buildup can cause a plugged sensation, discomfort, or reduced hearing. An ear examination helps determine whether wax or another problem is causing the symptoms.

Not every hearing change is caused by wax. Tell the provider about the symptoms and when they began rather than assuming that cleaning alone will address them.

Assessment before removal

The provider examines the ear and reviews your history before deciding whether removal is appropriate. Ask your clinic about available removal methods.

  • Tell the provider about ear tubes, an eardrum perforation, previous ear surgery, or previous problems with irrigation.
  • Mention pain, drainage, fever, dizziness, and any hearing changes.
  • Discuss whether follow-up or specialist assessment is needed if symptoms remain after treatment.

Before your visit

Call to confirm the patient’s age and whether the clinic can provide the appropriate assessment. Bring information about previous ear treatment and any drops or other products already used.

Do not put cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal. Ask a provider before attempting irrigation, particularly if you have an eardrum problem or a history of ear surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Will wax removal solve my hearing problem?

Wax is one possible cause of hearing changes. An examination helps identify the appropriate next step.

Which method will be used to remove wax?

The provider decides after examining the ear. Call ahead if you need to confirm a particular method.

Can a child be seen for ear wax?

Confirm the child’s age with your clinic. The provider will assess whether removal is appropriate and whether another service is needed.

What if pain or hearing changes continue?

Contact a provider for reassessment instead of repeatedly cleaning the ear.
