Blood sugar checks

Blood glucose readings as part of a provider’s assessment. Confirm the available test, preparation, and age requirements before your visit.

A measurement interpreted in context

A blood sugar check measures glucose in the blood. A provider may use the result when assessing symptoms or deciding whether further evaluation is needed.

Different tests answer different questions. A single reading is different from an A1C, glucose-tolerance test, or complete diabetes evaluation. If you need a particular test, confirm it with the clinic first.

What to expect

The provider reviews symptoms, relevant medicines, and the timing of food or drink before interpreting the result. Ask your clinic which sampling method it offers and how you will receive the result.

Follow-up testing or care with your primary care provider may be recommended. Ongoing diabetes management should continue with the clinician who knows your treatment plan.

Confirm preparation

Call with the patient’s age and the reason for the test. Preparation varies by test; ask whether fasting is required rather than fasting or changing medicines on your own.

  • Bring a current medication list and, if relevant, recent home glucose readings.
  • Bring any order or employer form specifying a particular test.
  • Ask how an abnormal result will be addressed and whether additional testing is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast?

That depends on the test. Confirm the clinic’s instructions beforehand, and do not change medicines unless your treating clinician advises it.

Can one reading diagnose diabetes?

The provider interprets the result in context and may recommend additional testing. A blood sugar reading is not a complete diabetes assessment.

Do you offer A1C testing?

Call your clinic to confirm A1C testing availability. It is a different test from a single blood sugar reading.

Can I bring my own glucose records?

Yes. Recent readings and your medication list can help the provider understand the reason for the visit.
